COURSE DESCRIPTION Every state has its own gang enhancement statue but it is sometimes never utilized to prosecute at the state level. The instructors of this course will show you how to take the evidence in your gang case, and apply it your state statute of an enhanced gang crime.
This course will show how the gang investigator’s stored gang intelligence becomes useful in the court room. There are many steps the gang investigator and the prosecutor must go through to get all of the evidence related to the gang case, ready for a courtroom presentation.
Many cities struggle over how to classify a small group of violent criminals, that are committing crimes together, but are identifying themselves through a unique self-created street name, rather than a nationally recognized street gang name. The instructors will provide the gang investigator logical, and reasonable explanations to provide to department administration, judges, jurors, prosecutors, and community members, on how and why their local hybrid street gang is just as violent, and dangerous as a nationally recognized gang is in a larger city. At first sight, much of this cross cultural influence appears confusing to the gang investigator and appears too difficult to prove in a court room presentation to meet certain elements of the gang statue. This class will explain the command structure, membership requirements, and adopted or copied signs and symbols hybrid gangs will create. This will allow the gang investigator to prove to the Judge and Jury, the motive, means, and opportunity the hybrid gang had in order to commit the violent crime they were involved in.
This course not only provides step by step examples of how to testify as a gang expert in court, but will also provide key elements to start and maintain your own gang investigation unit. Not only does a gang investigation unit focus on locking up the most violent criminals in your city, but a gang unit is also responsible for some of your department’s most important community relationships with the citizen’s it protects. This course will show examples of how police interaction with friends and family members of gang members and their neighborhoods, directly affect the quality of life for both the citizen, and the police officer.
